Latest news: We are aware that the Extreme Survivors and Economy globes cannot currently be downloaded within Atlas by Collins. We are currently working with our developers to resolve this issue and hope to have this fixed by mid-January at the latest.
Why should I use the Atlas by Collins™ rather than Google maps?
Atlas contains a series of interactive themed globes, broken down by subject areas: the app helps users put their world in context. Globe topics, such as environment, energy, population, communications and politics, are visualized by overlaying colour-coded layers of rich information on top of continents and countries. This is not a navigation app like Apple Maps or Google maps. This is an atlas, giving an overview of the world.
I am having trouble with my download speed – is there anything I can do to speed it up?
The content from Atlas by Collins™ has to be loaded onto your device before being viewed. This has the advantage of being able to use it at anywhere – on a plane, in the underground, in the wilderness – even when you do not have an internet connection. This does however mean that in initial download it is quite large. We advise a good Wi-Fi connection when downloading the app and additional globes.
I have downloaded Atlas by Collins™ to my iPod Touch but can’t get it to work.
Atlas by Collins™ is compatible with iPad 2 and above, and iPhone 4 and above only. We apologies for the misinformation on the Apple app store which lists iPod Touch under the Requirements. This was added by Apple automatically and we apologise for the inconvience.
Why is the atlas so big?
All 200,000 place names and all the mapping data is downloaded to your device. This means that the app works when offline and is much faster to use than streaming data via an internet connection. You can delete globes to free-up space on your device. You can also delete the whole app and then reinstall it at a later date without having to buy it again. Just go to the ‘Purchased’ area in the app store.
Why does the Atlas by Collins™ cost that much? What do I get for my money?
The app contains seven globes with the ability to overlay 35 levels of geographical information on top. We have also included further information with full world rankings for the statistics, whereas in printed atlases we would normally only have space for the top ten or twenty. This makes the app an extremely rich source of information for those who wish to delve deeper into global data.
How is Apple Maps integrated into the app?
The Atlas by Collins™ app is driven by independent data on more than 200,000 locations around the world. Based on the user’s operating system, Apple Maps or Google Maps appear at street-level viewing. Before the street view, the user is seeing maps developed by Collins, one of the most respected cartographic teams on the planet.
Why is the app only available on the newer iPads and iPhones?
When we designed the Atlas by Collins™ app, we took advantage of the newest Apple technology to display a wealth of information about our world in stunning fashion. The app was designed specifically for the newest iPads and iPhones using iOS6, which means better graphics, faster processing speed and an amazingly interactive user experience.
What are the future plans for the app?
The app has been built so Collins can add new globes, and we currently have some in development that will become available in the next month or two. We are working with partners to commission the best content to offer within Atlas by Collins™.
Will the app be available in other languages?
The app is available across most of the world as it stands and we are looking at all options for producing different languages. If this is done the aim will be to serve this as an update to the app resulting in the user not having to pay twice.
Can the app help me in my pub quiz?
The app is full of geographical facts and figures, but we can only endorse it for revision purposes before the quiz, not for use during!
Can I use the atlas to find my way between places?
This is not a navigation app. It is a world atlas app allowing a contextual view of the whole world.
Is there going to be an android version?
There are no immediate plans to launch an Android version; however we will be reviewing this in the coming months.
